Too Many Men in China

By , About.com GuideJanuary 13, 2007

Follow me on:

Foreign Policy reports that China will have, "30 million more men of marriageable age than women by 2020, making it difficult for them to find wives, according to a national report." FP reports that this much higher proportion of men can lead to violence. Read my related articles about China's One Child Law and China's population growth.

I guess Chinese men will have to go to the U.S. where most of the adult women are unmarry. However, I’ve never seen Chinese men mix their race. Neither have I known a gay chinese. Have you?

I would like to know more about the other countries experiencing this uneven growth. Is there an article naming the 67 countries and what they are experiencing?

Having lived in China in an urban area and having studied about the country and traveled extensively in it, I would say that the comment that the one child policy causes discrimination against girls is mostly untrue. In fact, the one child policy (and a surprising benefit of many of the communist era policies) was that because families only had one child, the girls became MORE valued. This is particularly true among urban, and thus more educated families. If a family has no other child, they lavish their attention on the only child, boy or girl. If my recollection is correct, the difference between male and female populations is worse in rural areas.

In addition, I know several Chinese male-western female couples. Although the reverse is much more common.

And yes, there are gay Chinese people. While not accepted openly in China, they certainly exist. And in the U.S. there are many gay Asians, Chinese and otherwise, particularly in urban areas.

Maybe women will be accepted and respected in that country soon. I know way too many people in the US who have adopted Chinese daughters.
