Russia's Extended Winter Holiday

The New York Times reports on Russia's new extended national holiday from the end of December through early January. It's a time where the country is shut down and all but essential workers are on vacation; even newspapers go unpublished for the period. Indeed, a quick glance at the online Pravda.Ru shows few articles published since December 29, the start of the holiday. What do you think about this newly created holiday period?
