It would appear that Los Angeles may be getting out of the palm tree business. The iconic flora of L.A. is expensive to keep up and doesn't provide nearly as much shade nor oxygen as its relatives. Thus, new projects in the City of Angels are limiting the number of palm trees as part of their foliage. The New York Times has more on their cross-national rival.

Comments
Palm trees are not native to California anyway, and they make a horrible and dangerous mess whenever the wind blows. Palm fronds are nasty to clean up. Eucalyptus trees, another non-native species, are equally bad news and should be done away with as well. They make an even bigger mess than palm trees, and their oily ground saturation makes it close to impossible to plant anything else sucessfully for many years. Los Angeles needs to return to native — or at least compatible — vegetation, to save water if for no other reasons. (Angelenos are the worst water wasters in the country.)
I am very pleased with the thought and don’t feel like adding anything in it. It a perfect answer.
