Geography Cup Challenge

By , About.com GuideNovember 15, 2006

Follow me on:

This week is Geography Awareness Week so an international online competition between residents of the U.S. and residents of the U.K. has begun! Called the Geography Cup, this online challenge tests the geographical knowledge of Americans versus the British. As of this posting, the United States was actually ahead - shocking! The contest runs until December 31 so good luck!

As a teacher, a geography enthusiast (and former Briton) I’m disappointed not to be able to participate in this type of cerebral activity! I’ll keep hoping that you will expand the range of participants.

haha US… in geography challenge! 70% of US residents in the middle states don’t know which ocean is to the east and which to the west, ha! Do you make any difference between Bolivia, Belgium and Bulgaria? English should be ashamed – to be second behind such people. Poor guys.

It is a shame that some of us who now live outside the USA are not able to participate in this challenge. As a world traveler, I am very much interested in geography. Go USA!

Hi folks! Thanks for your comments! I do hope that you understand that I am not involved in the Geography Cup and I thus don’t control who has access to it. I have asked a representative to respond to your concerns, however.

Hello All (from the creator of the Geography Cup),
I completely understand that there are many Americans outside of the US that would like to participate. And I apologize that the Cup is currently set up that way. Although not full proof, the only quick way to confirm a contestant’s validity is through a digital location check. Without this confirmation, believe it or not there would be widespread cheating. This has been proven in previous competitions. However, I stay open-minded. If any can suggest a better approach to validation, I am all ears.

It’s working, put apparently Wisconsin doesn’t count as part of the USA. I know we like the cold, worship Favre, and eat brats, but to declare us not part of the US?

(16) Rhonda says:

Alaska is apparently not part of the US either, but we’re used to that.
