The Population Reference Bureau provides a fascinating article about the growth and movement of professional sports teams in the United States from 1967, when the country's population was a mere 200 million to today at 300 million. From the PRB article: "Phoenix went from zero to four major sports teams. Tampa-St. Petersburg sports fans had something to cheer about too: the arrival of three major sports franchises, up from zero. And sports buffs in Dallas-Fort Worth can now root for four major local teams, up from one."
