Four Corners

By , About.com GuideNovember 3, 2006

Follow me on:

I received an urgent email from someone today who wanted to know the "exact" coordinates of Four Corners, where Colorado, Utah, Arizona, and New Mexico meet. I've always thought that the exact location of Four Corners is 109 degrees west and 37 degrees north (since those are the exact boundaries of the states that make up the Four Corners). Am I missing something?

They are frantic because they are competing in a Marlboro contest worth one million dollars. The exact coordinates of four corners is one of 100 riddles/questions in the contest.

Just thought I would explain their urgency. Have a great week!!

According to the Wikipedia entry (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Four_Corners_%28United_States%29):

“Four Corners occurs at the coordinates 36°59′56.81532″N, 109°02′42.62019″W according to the U.S. National Geodetic Survey.”

Even Wikipedia authors make typos. The NGS datasheet reports the location as:

NAD 83(1992)- 36 59 56.31532(N) 109 02 42.62019(W)

and that’s my final answer!

Your method of saying it is a rounded number. The exact would be 36.97 and 109.08 .Have fun.
