The 1477 edition of Claudius Ptolemy's atlas, the first printed, sold at an auction at Sotheby's in London earlier this month to a private collector for a record $3.9 million. $3.9 is the most anyone has ever paid for an out-of-date atlas. To think, I can buy last year's detailed road atlas of North America sometimes for as little as $4.95 at my local bookstore! The AP has more.
