When the US population reached 300 million people on Tuesday I hardly even noticed. By 2043 we are supposed to reach 400 million. However, in the furture this population increase will not go unnoticed. Along with increased population comes increased consumption of goods and services as well as increased production of waste. The ecological impact of 300 million Americans is huge. In general Americans use a lot of gasoline and water. The effect of this growing population will be seen in the future.

America’s reaching of its most recent population milestone of 300 million should alarm us. The news asked who the 300 millionth person might be; a newborn, or an illegal immigrant. The important question we need to answer is whether or not the United States has sustainable resources, and whether or not our environment will endure the pressures already present from 300 million people.

When I first heard of the landmark number, I was very worried. I have always had a negative view of the human species and what they tend to do to this planet.
But I am also very optomistic. I feel if any nation can handle 300 million people, it would probably be the United States. We are lucky enough to have an abundance of natural resources and access to any shortages through the global market. While this is in no way a solution, maybe this 300 millionth human will help us all figure out how to finally live on this planet.
