300 Million Next Tuesday

By , About.com GuideOctober 13, 2006

Follow me on:

At 7:46 a.m. (EDT) on Tuesday, October 17, the U.S. Census Bureau estimates that the United States population will reach 300 million. (As of this update, the Bureau's U.S. Popclock stands at 299,966,991.)

There's a lot of hoopla about 300 million; the Population Reference Bureau has a nice overview article called The United States at 300 Million. Especially interesting is this quote, "Each 100 million has been added more quickly than the last. It took the United States more than 100 years to reach its first 100 million in 1915. After another 52 years, it reached 200 million in 1967. Less than 40 years later, it is set to hit the 300-million mark. Within another 37 years, we are projected to pass 400 million." I think we need to limit the number of immigrants just as Canada does, because we have poor water in Maryland due to the overpopulation, and failures to limit growth. This also causes costs of housing, food, etc. to skyrocket.

With these statistics in mind, it would behoove leaders and citizens alike to be mindful of how 400 million will be accommodated. Careful planning for housing, food and water, land use and the environment must be considered and implemented in order to preserve our precious resources.

As a fellow Tar Heel, I must agree with the comments by NC resident. We must do a better job of stewardship of the earth.

The United kingdom doesn’t have a capital as such(your list states London) as it is made up of 4 separate countries, being, England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. Thier respective capitals are London, Belfast, Edinburgh and Cardiff.

I think that the U.S. population reaching 300 million is a big step, but I think that it is being taken too lightly. The quote about how it takes even less time to reach the next 100 million is looked over a lot. it isn’t necessarily a good thing to add population that fast. Yes it is nice to have people around, but one of these days we are going to be packed onto the earth if the population keeps rising so fast.

300 million people what a milestone to reach, and yet we are still less than a third of the size of the top 2 populous countries in the World. The environment will suffer as America’s population keeps growing. With the average American producing 5 pounds of garbage a day, and with our society’s love for the automobile we will be adding more garbage and pollution as we grow. Stricter environmental controls seem hard to come by these days and are needed more than ever. Lets hope that as the population increases more of us become aware of the affects we have on our environment and more people become involved in changing policy to help gain more measures to reduce pollution.
