Where Do You Want to Go?

By , About.com GuideSeptember 5, 2006

Follow me on:

I was thinking about where I'd like to go next and was wondering where you wanted to go on a dream trip and why? Post your dream destination and the reason why by following the "comments" link below! I'll start. I'd love to see Cairo, the Nile, and the rest of the Egyptian core area (including the Pyramids). Why? It's someplace I've always wanted to go.

I would love to take a working vacation in Africa, perhaps in Tanzania. I am enthralled with the history, the people, and the landscape of this continent. My trip would include doing something to help the people, so I could truly learn about its people.

(7) Surreyman says:

Sorry Matt – we’ve already ‘done’ the Nile from Cairo to Abu Simbel & the Sudan border inside out and several times! The Blue Nile though – that’s a chalenge ahead!
We’re obviously on the same wavelength as Diane Gray – Certainly the Silk Road(s) – we’ve started a project to do the entire length, but in stages. So far we’ve only completed Istanbul to the Syrian border though! …
And our major task remains that glorious 2-month camel trek from Southern Morocco to Timbuctu (although Timbuctu itself, except for its fantastic history, is these days rather a sorry place).

My travel goal used to be Australia (plus, crossing the Equator), and I was lucky enough to go in 2002. It was well worth it! What an amazing country! I had wanted to visit the Twelve Apostles (Great Ocean Road) ever since I read about it in a geography textbook back in fourth grade. When I finally got there (take motion sickness pills with you!), I was so overwhelmed by it that I just sat and cried.

My list seems to get longer and longer as I get older. Tokyo, the South Pacific, Peru/Argentina/Ecuador, Alaska, the Maldives, fly over the Arctic Circle, and Antarctica (but only for a short visit!)….

My aunt (a geography teacher) took an amazing trip to South Africa last year and hearing her talk about it made me want to go too! I also want to see a continental divide before I die–I hear there’s one spot in Norway that is amazing!

And reading everyone else’s lists, I want to go to Egypt and Iceland and Morocco as well!

Well, it’s easy enough to make a list of where we want to go. What about a list of places we have NO desire to ever visit?

(9) Andrea says:

My dream place to visit is either the arctica (one reason is to see some icebears) or the antarctica (I love penguins:-)). Besides the different animals which only lives at these places, I think the whole landscape of glaciers and natural ice sculptures is realle fascinating.

Another trip I wanna do once is doing the Hurtigruten by boat all up the coast of Norway.
However there are so many terrific places on this planet. It would be great to have a life just for travelling:-)
My next stop is Canada, Vancouver and its surrounding!!!

(10) Sharon says:

My favorite place on earth is India. I love it and I can’t wait to return. Turkey is also very nice and extremely interesting to me. However, I really would like to visit Iran because of Persepolis, Isfahan and all the other places that are nothing shy of historical. I was supposed to go to Turkey 9 days after the attacks but instead I went 9 months later. I am still alive and I think I would love Iran.

(11) Sharon says:

I would like to go to Ireland. Thirty years ago I was there as a young 20 something and would like to see it from somewhat more mature eyes. I remember enjoying the people, the landscapes and the castles. I wouldn’t go on a tour but rent a car this time around, staying in bed and breakfasts along the way. I would spend more time in the town where my great grandfather was born. I would get to share it with my husband this time around!

(15) McHugh says:

I have many dream trips to go, and at my age, I’m making sure I get as many in as I can. Italy is a priority for two reasons: letting my 89 year-old father see Italy as he should have not as he did in 1943 and having me visit my dearest friend’s village tucked away up in the mountains of southern Italy.
My first trip there was awesome: a small, almost isolated village built into the mountain side, panoramic views from a bedroom window above the chuch bell tower. The bakery was run on wood-fired ovens, the streets were so narrow in areas you could literally reach out your front door and touch your neighbor’s house, a wedding party walked through the town and everyone received a basket of homemade cookies, women carried baskets perched on their heads and old men made brooms from the straw gleened from the fields, Roman ruins were everywhere. These are a proud, friendly, lively people.

After Italy, I want to stay home and travel around the US and Canada by way of any road but the interstate.

Hmmm…..I would like to go to Italy (Tuscany and Rome) because they both look so gorgeous! Hopefully, someday I will be able to go there.

(17) Rebecca says:

There are many places I would like to go, a number of them mentioned by others here. Mine is a cautionary tale though. I am presently too decrepit to travel well or happily. If you wish a lifetime of travel, take care of yourself NOW. Keep your weight down. Ride your bike. Walk several miles each week. Climb stairs for exercise. Keep all your parts in good order. I didn’t and wish I had. Now I read geography columns and look at pictures from past trips.

(18) Barbara says:

My next trip is the Czech Republic, to see the country my grandfather emigrated from nearly 100 years ago (it was Bohemia then). I’d also like to see Botswana, and southern India has always been a dream.
I loved Egypt – my best vacation ever. Australia was good, though I have friends there, and I loved the southern sky (we’re astronomers). And Paris is my perenial Favorite Place!

(21) Timothy Miller says:

I want to be able to explore Persia and Babylon. Unfortunately it’s not safe to visit either right now and it doesn’t look like they will be open anytime soon. I’m taking my secondary students to Italy and Greece in the Spring, it’s the best we can do and that . . . is not too bad.

I would love to do the trek that someone else mentioned from South Morroco to Timbuktu and then down the Niger River to Bamakoa and then across to Dhaka. A trip to the Cape Verde Islands would just finish it off.

I would love to go back to Iran one day as well and the Silk Road is a dream.

A circle cruise of the Med with ports of call on 3 continents – a cross-section of world culture and history with fabulous scenery and food at every turn.

And a bow to poster number 5 who has been to 6 continents and counting – a truly awesome achievement – I am not worthy ;)

(26) June says:

I have actually been to three of my four places I’ve always wanted to visit. Alaska twice actually, Iceland, and Lake Baikal. All were incredible, and I would move to Alaska if the opportunity came along. Iceland is my favorite country, and I’ve visited 30+. I have to afdd number 4 which is South Africa. Lucky me, I find free trips offered to teachers so I’m busy looking for one to South Africa next summer.

(27) Catholicgauze says:

I always wanted to bike in Southern France and do the coast to coast walk in England.

September 12, 2006 at 3:04 pm
(28) Dawn says:

The two places high on my list are Iceland and Madagascar. Iceland for the contrast of fire and ice – and the incredible Icelandic ponies. Madagascar for the wildlife and landscapes. But the next trip I actually have booked is to China and Tibet.

Post 17 makes a good point – keep in shape. I really worked hard to be in shape for a chimp and gorilla trek in Uganda last summer – and the heat and humidity did me in anyway!

(29) William Slattery says:

If you look at a very good map of the north coast of Venezuela, you’ll see that the northeast corner of the country consists of a long mountainous peninsula that points toward the island of Trinidad. The south side of that peninsula skirts the Gulf of Paria and is flat enough to support an east-west road. On the northern, Caribbean edge of the peninsula, if your map is very good, you’ll see the names of half a dozen villages. Here’s the thing: THERE ARE NO ROADS TO THESE VILLAGES! You can only get there by boat or by foot. My ultimate travel fantasy is to spend a month finding out what life is like in those tropical villages so remote.

(30) Diane says:

Although my next trip will likely be to Kenya, specifically Kisumu & Nairobi for a few weeks, I’d love to spend 2 months visiting regions in The Gambia & Senegal; Conakry, Guinea & Bamako, Mali and stay with a local family in each place.

Also, re: Rebecca’s comments about need for health, energy & ease of mobility while traveling. She is correct! I was terribly out of shape when I visited Tokyo but walking that hilly region I lost 8 lbs in 2 weeks (although it could be the diet too –yummy:). I need to lose more so I’m preparing for my next trip by walking, walking & more walking now.

Turkey- From Istanbul down the western coast. The rich history of major dynasties. Mainly the Ottoman, Byzantine, and Roman. Not to mention greek, armenian, arab, russian and the many other influences the area has had. Plus the beaches and a good bottle of Turkish wine wouldn’t hurt.

I would love to visit the azore islands, west of Portugal, in the atlantic ocean. First of all: you are never far from the sea. Secondly, I would enjoy a simpler life for a while, where part of our suffocating civilisation has not yet arrived and maybe never will.
