The Associated Press modified their AP Stylebook, finally officially endorsing the use of the name Mumbai to replace Bombay and the name Chennai to replace Madras. The AP stated that the change reflects that the new names, changed by the government in 1996, have "Gained favor internationally and in everyday speech." However, the AP has not begun recommending the use of Kolkata, which replaced Calcutta in 2001.
