Russia Attacks Japanese Fishermen Near Disputed Kuril Islands

By , About.com GuideAugust 16, 2006

Follow me on:

The Russian coast guard shot and killed one and captured three Japanese fishermen who were near the disputed Kuril Islands. Russia claims the fishing boat was within its territorial waters and has yet to release the three survivors. Both Russia and Japan have yet to sign a peace treaty ending World War II due to the island dispute. BBC News has more and I have a summary of the controversy.

the russians shooting was somewhat a shock. their is clear distinction between a fisherman boat and that of warship. their actions were drastic but thier is a reason to be a bit reasonable with the way they acted. the world today is filled with fear and destruction from terrorism. so the nation cannot seem indecisive and weak when it comes to situations like this. i im not saying i agree with their shooting and capture of the japaneese citizens, just that i understand why they had to do it.
