California's Power Problems

For the first time in a few years, California issued a Stage 2 electrical emergency. This reminded me of an article I wrote in 2001 about the months of serious power emergencies and rotating power outages. It'll be interesting to see if the Golden State gets to Stage 3!

California has power problems due to the politicians and the CPUC that are holding out. If we made use of the environmentally friendly cogeneration power that is already being produced we’d have plenty to go around. It’s just a political game and another excuse to jack up the cost.

What really baffles me is why more new homes aren’t being built with grid tie-in solar systems. I’m sure some of the major builders could get substantial discounts on components, and it wouldn’t riase the price of a new home dramatically. C’mon, if someone can afford $650,000 for a house, they can afford $675,000 for a solar house, then they can chuckle when the power goes out for the rest of the people!
