Bonny Jain, a eighth-grader from Moline, Illinois, who won fourth place in last year's National Geographic Bee, won the top prize in this year's competition held in Washington D.C. on Tuesday and Wednesday. Had Bonny placed second or third in last year's Bee, he would have been disqualified from participating again this year.
Bonny returns to Washington D.C. on May 31 to compete in the finals of the Scripps National Spelling Bee. By placing first, he won a $25,000 scholarship and a lifetime membership in the National Geographic Society.
