The U.S. Census Bureau provides some facts in honor of African-American History Month, which is the month of February in the United States. The Bureau reports that the estimated African-American population (including "multiple-race" individuals) in the U.S. as of July 1, 2004 is 39.2 million; the "single-race" population will grow to 61.4 million by 2050. Some very excellent news from the Bureau is that the number of African-Americans with advanced degrees has nearly doubled in the last ten years! According to the Bureau, the state with the greatest number of African-Americans is New York and the county with the highest African-American population is Cook County, Illinois.
