Talk about controversy! I received a ton of email about my list of the world's largest cities. Many felt the numbers were wrong and argued their points. However, we must realize that all population figures for the world's largest urban areas are simply estimates. It's just not possible to have an exact number and estimates can vary by the millions. Nonetheless, I've utilized another data source to produce a second list of the world's largest urban area. Compare the two - both list the largest urban areas with populations above 8 million; the first list (perhaps under-estimating urban area size) includes 26 places, the new list (perhaps over-estimating urban area size) lists 34 places.
Then, once you look at the lists, be sure to share your thoughts and read what others have to say on the Geography Forum!
