7.0 Earthquake Off California Coast

Tuesday June 14, 2005
At approximately 7:50 p.m. local time a major earthquake registering magnitude 7.0 struck 90 miles west of the Northern California coast near Crescent City and Eureka. A tsunami warning was temporarily issued for the entire Pacific Coast of the United States, from the Mexican border to Vancouver, Canada. The warning instructed everyone in beach and low-lying areas to leave.

While the earthquake was felt across Northern California and Southern Oregon, there were no significant reports of damage. The earthquake was the largest in the region since the magnitude 7.0 September 28, 2004 Parkfield earthquake. Learn more about California earthquakes and how to prepare for a tsunami.
