The United States Geological Survey says that of the 169 volcanoes in the United States, thirteen are critical volcanoes that are high risk and are not well-monitored. Nine of the thirteen are in the Cascade Range of the Western United States: Rainier, Hood, Shasta, South Sister, Lassen, Crater Lake, Baker, Glacier Peak, and Newberry. The remaining four are Alaskan volcanoes: Redoubt, Makushin, Akutan, and Augustine.
