Is Taiwan a Country?

Wednesday March 23, 2005
With the recently approved Chinese anti-secession law that allows a Chinese military attack on Taiwan to prevent the island from seeking independence, I thought it was defintely time to explore the question of Taiwan's status as an independent country. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to click to discover my answer to the question of, "Is Taiwan a Country?"

I have a question about one of your points ~
7. Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the country’s territory.

Somewhat. While Taiwan has maintained its own control over the island from Taipei since 1949, China still claims to have control over Taiwan.

when you say China has claims to control over Taiwan. What specific control are you refering to?
Because The Republic of China elects their own President Unlike Hong Kong where people get little say when they transfer back to China in 97 they got a new governer who is appointed by China and new policy 23 where they cannot express any dissatisfaction against the communist party. In Canada I have signed many patition against that I’ve seen it happen. But those kind of things does not apply in The Republic of China. We have our own tax system and last time I recall my taxes doesn’t go to Peoples Republic of China and unlike a communist country we don’t get those food tickets from them either. In Peoples Republic of China because it is communist they get fed without doing anything anyways. But it’s different in The Republic of China.

are you saying US should still belong to UK ?? History is the past… but you must know that after the Japanese left Taiwan it is the last province of the Republic of China, Peoples Republic of China (communist from Russia) Tried to destroy Chinese history and so did chairman Mau, so I hate it when mainland people talk about Chinese history. They have no right to talk about something they tried to destroy. Present day Chinese history is only preserved because of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of it in Mainland are destroyed.

(5) Lu says:

Pierre Chen,

Have you ever been Mainland? How come you are saying “Most of Chinese culture in Mainland are destroyed”. I tell you: Republic of China was a country, but Taiwan is NOT! Taiwan is a province of ROC. Shit!

Pierre Chen,

Have you ever been Mainland? How come you are saying “Most of Chinese culture in Mainland are destroyed”. I tell you: Republic of China was a country, but Taiwan is NOT! Taiwan is a province of ROC.

April 13, 2007 at 12:54 pm
(7) Pierre Chen says:

Lu I have been to mainland. And when I went to mainland china “I use my Republic of China passport to get in”.
You should do your research before you speak. ROC is The Republic of China.
you guys are PRC Peoples Republic of China. aka communist.
now we have that cleared.
go do some research~~

This is why I say in Mainland the traditional curture is distroyed.

1)Are you denying the existence of the culture revolution in China. where they burned books of the traditional chinese culture?
what do you use when you type chinese on your computer do you use “abc” or “ㄅㄆㄇ”
2)in school do you study Confusis? no u don’t. But in Taiwan we do, we study Confusis not like the red army where they destroyed university and burned books.
3) you write in simplified chinese. That is edited from the original. it is just easier to write. BUT that is no an evolution to our languare, it is an mutation. It is just randomely deleting strokes to each symbol it doesn’t have meaning.

Now i am going to explain why Taiwan is a country by itself not a provience of “PRC” (don’t get it wrong this time Lu)

1) the Treaty of Shimonoseki is an unequal treaty that clearely “HAS NO TIME LIMIT’ which means there the Japanese own the land FOREVER. But since the ROC defeated the Japanese occupation they “CLAIMED” the land. Just like when PRC defeated the ROC they claimed the land.

2)During the founding of the UN the political seat on UN is ROC
“http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e7/Naciones_Unidas_3.jpg/180px-Naciones_Unidas_3.jpg”
do you see chinas flag in there anywhere?
I see The ROC flag.. but i can’t find the POC flag… GEEE I WONDER WHY.

you can’t just say ROC is part of PRC “JUST BECAUSE” you need to state some reasons. So far i can’t find any reasons why it belongs to PRC Lu.

I am not saying Taiwan is a country I am saying ROC is a country and ROC is in Taiwan right now.

(8) taiwanese says:

TAIWAN is a independent COUNTRY; NOT a province of china. provinces don’t have presidents and their own currency; but taiwan has its own president and currency.

also, another point to be illustrated here: why would a country point missiles at themself? coz it’s a DIFFERENT COUNTRY.

stop lying to yourselves. face the truth, and accept the fact.

April 16, 2007 at 10:06 pm
(9) Pierre Chen says:

Just to set couple of things clear. I think taiwanese misunderstood me. What I am saying is ROC (中華民國) is a country and PROC(中華人民共和國)is a country. But Taiwan (台灣)is not a country it is only a province of ROC (中華民國).

April 16, 2007 at 11:21 pm
(10) taiwanese says:

i understood your points here, mr chen, where you’ve already stated it clear in your previous comment.

i’m ok with “taiwan, roc” but there seems to be a little problem with “taiwan, province of china” which i saw on a famous website providing with its own blogging service.

April 17, 2007 at 11:15 am
(11) Pierre Chen says:

Are you referring to the comment made by Dan Jacobson??
I am unsure what was that all about, all I saw was he made such a comment. But ROC where C stands for china aswell.. so … anyways. If possible could you give me some relative info on that??

ps. 我也是台灣人 ^^

(12) taiwanese says:

certainly, the blogging service i’m referring to is vox.com. here’s a random sample. you can clearly see in the lady’s profile, it says: “taiwan, province of china”

the “c” in roc surely stands for china, but “province of china”? it’s not as accurate in my opinion… :/

(13) yy says:

I don’t quite understand the author’s logic. If there are 8 Criterias, they must be fulfilled to make Taiwan a Country. He got so many “Somewhat”s but still can conclude that Taiwan is a country! If the author is not stupid, he must be paid “somewhat” to say so.
Besides, No. 2 to 7 are bullshit. If transportation, education, population, public service can make a Country, there will be thousands of Countries in the World. On the other hand, poor people can never have a Country!

Currency? That is one point, but not always true. Like HK also has its own currency, while Europe use the same currency. “why would a country point missiles at themself”? America also got Civil War. It’s quite common that one country has more than one governments. They fight each other for the domination of the country.
Everyone knows the fact that PRC never takes control of Taiwan. But another government of China does. “Is Taiwan a Country?” Absolutely NOT. Taiwan belongs to China.
Someone do not feel happy to say “Taiwan is a province of China”. Because if there is a joint government, Taiwan should have a equal power as Beijing. If you think so, do not avoid, fight for it.

For that, Taiwan is a province of the People’s Republic of China!

Actually, I disagree with all of you.

To those mainlander Chinese: Yeah, you say we’re your province. But what about our government? You kind of can’t ignore that. Heck, we even have our own political parties. Also, Zhou Ying, I’m sorry, but the first Taiwanese were more related to the Austronesian people than the Chinese. The Taiwanese and Chinese cultures, ancestors, languages, and history are different (though I myself am only a 外省人. It is not a fact that Taiwan is a province. Obviously, it’s disputed.

To Taiwanese: We really can’t say we’re a country yet. We can say that we have all the trappings of a country, and technically are one, but we’re not one yet until everyone, including the PRC, agrees.

I don’t see much the point of debating this is though. The question is, do want to be a country? I personally think that it would be better to be reunited with the PRC/PRC reunited with us. We, both PRC and ROC, have to stay united to keep strong. Remember the idiom, “渔翁得利?” (I might’ve typed that wrong).

Answering Guo’s questions with more questions:
1)What did the British do when Canada asked for independence? (Canada is an independent country, right? Although the British queen is still titled as our queen).
2)Did Enomoto Takeaki declared the independence of Hokkaido on behave of the native people of Hokaido[Ainu/Ezo), that is, to free them from Meiji Government, or was this act only for his own benefits? (if KMT declared the independence of Taiwan when they were defeated in 1949, then it would be the same thing, which is actually not that bad, since we all take advantage of the natives anyway(I am being sarcastic)… But they are all thickheaded a__holes who looked down on people already lived on Taiwan island for generations.)

2) Taiwan has never formally declared themselves as an independent country, therefore it’s NOT AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY.
3) for those of you who think that communism is bad, Taiwan should be a democracy, blah blah blah, well… Taiwan is not a democratic government, it’s a nationalism. And Taiwan ca n be like Hon Kong, one country two governments; China doesn’t have to rule over Taiwan like it does its own provinces.
4) Taiwan’s history is like this:
– communists and nationalists fight in China
– nationalists lost
– nationalist escaped to Taiwan
– they had human rights issues. (Forcing natives to speak mandarin, follow their government…)
So my point is, Taiwan has always rightfully been a part of China. Why do you guys think Taiwan is an independent country??

(49) someone says:

Hi
I just want to express what I think, do not mean to upset anyone okay.

I believe that Taiwan belongs to China for many years. The issue of Taiwan wanting to be independent has been not very long.

Many years ago China was targeted by many countries: like the Japanese and Europe countries, they wanted to take over China, but unfortunately they could not. During that time, Japanese controlled one of China’s states known as Taiwan. By 1949, when the Japanese gave back the island to China, people that live in Taiwan declare that they are not part of China. That they want to be independent. Now seriously, do you think this is right? Honestly.

If other states of China continue to be the same like Taiwan demanding to have its own country, do you think there will be anymore China?? It is like saying, Australia for example, Tasmania suddenly says they do not want to be part of Australia and wants to be an independent country. If Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales etc follows what Tasmania is doing (also becoming an independent country) then there won’t be anymore Australia.

There are many languages in China, it has been like this for many years, there are Hakka, the Cantonese, Mandarin, and lots more, but the most commonly use is Mandarin. Mandarin is a world wide language. There are different languages; there are low mandarin and high in all part of China, including Taiwan. Just because Taiwan has a different language, or sound that does not mean they are different from China.
Yes, communists back in China then were hard and poor, but the government used money for economic growth, for its people and for its country and look at China today. China and its people has overcome many hardships but they have made their country well, China now as you can see is spectacular, has step into a modern generation and succeeded many things. It is still communist today but at least there are more freedom than before, people is not as suffering much as before. Some China’s government are still corrupt but they are the lower government, the higher ones like the president are not corrupt. If he was corrupt and greed does you think there will be China today?

Well, that what I think about Taiwan and China. I hope I did not bore you from reading my views, if I did, sorry. I hope I did not upset some people. It is not like I do not care about your views and hate you or something. I believe everyone should love each other and understand each other.

(50) me, irene says:

There are always some odd arguments existing in the threads like this. Like, both Chinese are Taiwanese are mostly ethnically the same and talking in quite the same language, they should be one country. Last time i checked the UK and US are different countries. Or arguments like, they both inheritd Chinese culture, they should be one country. Last time I also checked, Singapore is an independent country, and Korean are clebrating Chinese New Year and worships Confucius. Or, Taiwan is recognized as a country by only 26 UN memebers, it’s not a country. Then what is the number of countries to be the legitimate “cutoff” for recognizing “countryship”. Taiwan is not a memebr of UN only becasue of China’s objection.
The truth is: if Taiwanese people want to be an independent country, he can decide their future by referendum. No other country should interfere. Last time I checked, Canada didn’t point their missles at Quebec when they had their independence referendum.
Chinese people should start learning to respect other people’s choices. I understand it’s not been in your culture and communism education, but it’s a good time to start to. Also, how told you once Taiwanese declare independence, they won’t be united with you someday in the future. Last time I still checked, there is only one Germany now.
For god sake, Chinese, try open your mind for a bit.

Why does Taiwan need to declare independence? It IS a de facto independent country! Taiwan has everything a legitimate country should have. It is not like Tibet which is ruled (and suppressed) by Chinese. Taiwan’s only problem is that most countries in the world, for fear of China’s power, do not recognize her as a country. So by asking yourself the following you will know if Taiwan is a country: “are you a human being if most people say you’re not?”

———————-

I will dispute you point by point and tell you why you’re an idiot.

1.) Because your hostile government won’t let Taiwan

2.) Because your hostile government has pledged to kill Taiwanese people if they do so.

3.) This isn’t even a reason as to WHY a tract of land is a part of another country, it’s a very weak description of two forms of government. (Taiwan’s government is indeed a democracy though, just laced with extreme amounts of nationalism)

4.) Vague, SOMEWHAT accurate description. Neglects to mention the millions of Taiwanese inhabitants living there for years under older Chinese dynasties and later, the Japanese. (And if humans rights violations were a valid reason to deny the sovereignty of a nation, you most DEFINITELY lose.)

5.) That’s just laughable. Americans can be wrong but then again so can China. The reason why Americans view Taiwan as a de facto independent nation is because it IS one.

———————-

Simple Facts:

- Taiwan possesses its own government, military, economy, and territory.

- The People’s Republic of China has never set foot on Taiwanese soil.

- In fact, no Chinese government has ruled Taiwan since the end of the 19th century.

Conclusion:

You have a mediocre mind.

Taiwan,is and will be a part of China …but as an autonomous area in china, not under the administration of the central government(PRChina) in Peking …und taiwan is defined as a province of china in the constitution of both PRChina und ROChina…

(55) productioninchina says:

Do many products that are manufactured in Taiwan say ‘Made in China’ on them?

The answer is NO. Why would people do that? Chinese made products are not top notched in the world. Made in Taiwan products have much better reputation than those made in sorry China. In addition, it’s agaist trade law to masquerade the origin of products.

This question stems from the fact that many products say ‘Made in China’ but I know they are manufactured by Taiwanese companies.

Have you seen Dell or HP products labeled made in China? Most absolutely. For cheap labor, Taiwanese companies either outsouce their products or physically build procution lines somewhere in China. Same story.

(56) C.S. Haviland says:

The article is correct, Taiwan is a de-facto sovereign country. It does not need to declare independence as America did, because it did not ever belong to the government that currently rules mainland China. It is all that remains of the government that was forced out of mainland China by an enemy government, and which had previously overthrown the Empire of China.

People need to understand the difference between ethnic references and governmental references. Taiwan is called Republic of China, and the Mainland is currently called the People’s Republic of China. Just because they both use the word “China” does not mean they are the same country, but rather that they are the same ethnic group.

Should the Taiwanese government allow itself to merge with the People’s Republic of China, such that they become answerable to and taxable by the PROC, with constitutional documentation, only then will they become a “province of China.” (A possibility that is favored by their current President, although not traditionally favored by a majority of the Taiwanese people.)

Until then, we must ignore such political definitions as “One China Policy” as these are accepted by the U.N. and the U.S. and other countries to keep Taiwan from being attacked by the mean-spirited PROC. The position of the U.S. on this matter is superficial in order to keep the peace, it is not a de-facto recognition. Actually the U.S. has an agreement to defend Taiwan militarily in the event that PROC attacks it; not something the U.S. would do if Taiwan were officially recognized as a province of China. The PROC’s claims are empty and false, and they have bullied the U.N. into excluding Taiwan a seat, which is appalling.

(57) Fair trade says:

I am a Chinese living in Canada and I am trying to see the issue in a bystander’s view.
I think the reason behind all this argument is the difference between PRC and ROC and has been over the last 100 so years.

First of all, I think taiwanese people(some) should stop their rude comments about mainland China. It’s true currently Taiwan is better than mainland in many ways, but China is developing. It will be better. China has the fastest developing rate than any other country, Many countries fear China because it is indeed very powerful and has a lot of potential to be better. The only reason Taiwan is better than China is because China has way to many people, it is of course easier to make a 23 million people land

Second, I think many chinese are too narrow minded about this issue. It is true chinese government has a lot of influence on people of china’s minds. Before I came to Canada, I too was very narrow minded and is offended by anything against China. It is true there has been many pressure from the chinese government to other countries and the ROC. Chinese should accept the fact that Taiwan is different and independent and not China’s to control. However, it is not a different country either (no official document, sorry to disappoint some ppl)

Lastly, I truly think PRC and ROC should work together. They are like opposite forces, but together, they can be very powerful. Although looking from now, that is quite hard. chinese people and taiwanese people are very ‘disgusted’ by each other, trying to claim things for their own. But in reality, if ppl would be a little more open-minded, they will see that both has goods and bads. And working together would solve many unnecessary problems.

PPl! dont post rude comments about each other. Even if you swear your mind away, this issue is still going to be decided by PRC and ROC themselves. I know everyone is patriotic to their own ‘country’ but we have to be open-minded and see the real problem.

(58) motherland says:

From China’s perspective, there is only one China in the world. Taiwan has been a part of China for hundreds of years. They speak the same language, celebrate the same festivals, and have almost the same culture.

The present situation of separation between Taiwan and China mainland is the result of Civil War of China(or Liberation War of China 1946-1950). The former government of China, the KMT party government, fled to Taiwan island because of the total defeat in the mainland. Meanwhile, Communist China had no ability to cross the strait to reunite Taiwan island at that time. In China’s view, the problem of Taiwan and China not already being reunited is due to interference from the U.S. government.

In 1949, the Chinese government announced that Taiwan is a province of China. Since then, all the countries which want to establish a foreign relationship with PRC must recognize that Taiwan’s belonging to China. The UN also recognizes that Taiwan belongs to China.

In Taiwan’s society today, DPP politicians who are absolute supporters of Taiwan’s independence are in control, but a number of Taiwanses people believe there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of it.

For economic reasons, as well as avoiding war, Taiwan should not be independent. Only the reunification of Taiwan with China will give Taiwan a more broader future. It is advantagous to mainland China that reunification with Taiwan take place because the Taiwanese people speak standard Chinese and know deeply about China. Mastering Chinese will be rather important in the future. So Taiwan maintaining a close relationship with mainland China will be the best what it can be.

(59) motherland says:

“The People’s Republic of China claims sovereignty over Taiwan and regards Taiwan as a province of China. The United Kingdom acknowledges the position of the Chinese Government that Taiwan is a province of China and recognises the Chinese Government as the sole legal government of China. The United Kingdom does not recognise Taiwan as a state and does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The United Kingdom considers the Taiwan issue is one to be settled by the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We are strongly opposed to any use of force and urge both sides to engage in constructive dialogue.

The United Kingdom enjoys a flourishing relationship with Taiwan based on trade, investment, financial, educational, cultural and other exchanges. The information provided below and all references to Taiwan and the Taiwan authorities should be read in this context.”

I think that Taiwan should be a country because, that Taiwan has functioned for decades without those mainlanders. Taiwan also has a great economy and a great government. Its not fair that China is bullying us to no become a country. Taiwan also has a large population (23million) that all agree that Taiwan should be its own country.

It just doesn’t make sense to me.

Taiwan, you are lucky years ago the communists of China did not invaded the land you are on now. PRC could have invaded you, but the Americian back you up. At that time, Americans did not like communists either. But now, most people know it is not that bad. There are good and bad things about communists. Anyways, American backed you up and let you into the UN. While you were at the UN, China didnt really care about invading you all not AND THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU ARE NOT PART OF CHINA, CAUSE YOU STILL ARE. Anyways, when PRC has grew its country [ the economic and country] UN invited China join in. China said you want me to go in, you take taiwan out of the UN, because taiwan was and still is part of us. So taiwan got out. AND NOW they say China is bullying Taiwan and controlling them and not letting them be a country…. right…… HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN YOU ARE STILL PART OF CHINA NOT LONG AGO, WELL CERTAINLY CHINA HAVE NOT HAVE THEY??
Anyways, expressing my views between China and taiwan is interesting and I know this will go on and on wateva. I want to tell you guys something. Eventhough I am Chinese, I still enjoy having anyone as being my friend. I have lots of taiwanese friends, we talk for fun right, I asked them one day, do you think Taiwan belongs to China? Now this is true. Choose to believe or not I don’t care. Continue, they say yes, yes, yes. Then I asked, you think taiwan used to belong to china? Some said yes but not anymore, some said never, and some said yes but now wants their own country. I dont know what to say..lol

1. ROC didn’t threw japanese from Taiwan, USA did.
2. According to San Francisco Treaty, Taiwan is still under USA military Government.
3. Taiwan never been ruled by PRC, not even a minute.
4. If Taiwan is a “part of China”, why you need visa to go there? Do you need visa to go to Fujian, province of China? And, please, don’t tell me about visas to HK – HK was borrowed by England, borrowed, understand? Time came- it was returned to China. And UK built democratic society there, that’s why you need visa to go there.
5. Taiwan is independent DE FACTO, and, definitely, will be independent DE JURE soon. If China will attack Taiwan – it will be suicide for China.
