Is Taiwan a Country?

By March 23, 2005

Follow me on:

With the recently approved Chinese anti-secession law that allows a Chinese military attack on Taiwan to prevent the island from seeking independence, I thought it was defintely time to explore the question of Taiwan's status as an independent country. I'm sure you'll be fascinated to click to discover my answer to the question of, "Is Taiwan a Country?"

The United states of America also shares mostly the same culture, ancestor, language with the Great Britain. So should we consider The USA being part of the Great Britain. On the hand, follow the original comment argument, Tibetan should not be considered as part of the People’s Republic of China. Tibetan has it own culture, language, ancestor and so on. They even have their on religion and political leaders. The bottom line regarding how a piece of land belong to a certain county or not should be determined by the people live on that land. Last time I checked, over 80 % of Taiwanese do not want to be part of the People’s Republic of China. So it is about time for Chinese to update their concept of what is a country. Let the people live in Taiwan, Tibetan, and other lands occupied by People’s Republic of China after the WWII be their on master. Leave them along !

(4) Windsor says:

This is pure ignorance. A country can have multiple ethnicities, cultures, and languages. Over the thousands of years, countries break and join all the time. Look at the USSR, look at the former European empires. What determines the sovereignty of a specific region is its power and influence. Right now, the PRC has a lot more power and influence on the international stage, politically and economically, over the 1949 exiled government of Taiwan (ROC). In other words, just like the U.S., he who has more power writes the narrative.

March 9, 2007 at 1:26 pm
(5) Pierre Chen says:

I have a question about one of your points ~
7. Has sovereignty. No other State should have power over the country’s territory.

Somewhat. While Taiwan has maintained its own control over the island from Taipei since 1949, China still claims to have control over Taiwan.

when you say China has claims to control over Taiwan. What specific control are you refering to?
Because The Republic of China elects their own President Unlike Hong Kong where people get little say when they transfer back to China in 97 they got a new governer who is appointed by China and new policy 23 where they cannot express any dissatisfaction against the communist party. In Canada I have signed many patition against that I’ve seen it happen. But those kind of things does not apply in The Republic of China. We have our own tax system and last time I recall my taxes doesn’t go to Peoples Republic of China and unlike a communist country we don’t get those food tickets from them either. In Peoples Republic of China because it is communist they get fed without doing anything anyways. But it’s different in The Republic of China.

are you saying US should still belong to UK ?? History is the past… but you must know that after the Japanese left Taiwan it is the last province of the Republic of China, Peoples Republic of China (communist from Russia) Tried to destroy Chinese history and so did chairman Mau, so I hate it when mainland people talk about Chinese history. They have no right to talk about something they tried to destroy. Present day Chinese history is only preserved because of Hong Kong and Taiwan. Most of it in Mainland are destroyed.

Pierre Chen,

Have you ever been Mainland? How come you are saying “Most of Chinese culture in Mainland are destroyed”. I tell you: Republic of China was a country, but Taiwan is NOT! Taiwan is a province of ROC. Shit!

(9) Pierre Chen says:

Lu I have been to mainland. And when I went to mainland china “I use my Republic of China passport to get in”.
You should do your research before you speak. ROC is The Republic of China.
you guys are PRC Peoples Republic of China. aka communist.
now we have that cleared.
go do some research~~

This is why I say in Mainland the traditional curture is distroyed.

1)Are you denying the existence of the culture revolution in China. where they burned books of the traditional chinese culture?
what do you use when you type chinese on your computer do you use “abc” or “ㄅㄆㄇ”
2)in school do you study Confusis? no u don’t. But in Taiwan we do, we study Confusis not like the red army where they destroyed university and burned books.
3) you write in simplified chinese. That is edited from the original. it is just easier to write. BUT that is no an evolution to our languare, it is an mutation. It is just randomely deleting strokes to each symbol it doesn’t have meaning.

Now i am going to explain why Taiwan is a country by itself not a provience of “PRC” (don’t get it wrong this time Lu)

1) the Treaty of Shimonoseki is an unequal treaty that clearely “HAS NO TIME LIMIT’ which means there the Japanese own the land FOREVER. But since the ROC defeated the Japanese occupation they “CLAIMED” the land. Just like when PRC defeated the ROC they claimed the land.

2)During the founding of the UN the political seat on UN is ROC
“http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/thumb/e/e7/Naciones_Unidas_3.jpg/180px-Naciones_Unidas_3.jpg”
do you see chinas flag in there anywhere?
I see The ROC flag.. but i can’t find the POC flag… GEEE I WONDER WHY.

you can’t just say ROC is part of PRC “JUST BECAUSE” you need to state some reasons. So far i can’t find any reasons why it belongs to PRC Lu.

I am not saying Taiwan is a country I am saying ROC is a country and ROC is in Taiwan right now.

(10) tom says:

actually the r.o.c. is a government in exile. they have sovereignty on the matsu island group and jimen island. taiwan is an independent customs territory officially and the u.s. has legal status over it. the r.o.c. occupyies it as a subordinate military power. that doesnt mean sovreignty. the r.o.c. doesnt have sovreignty either. the p.r.c. has no right to taiwan at all.
the japanese gave up all the rights to taiwan at the treaty of san francisco 1952 and gave legal status to the u.s. by usmg. the u.s. doesnt have sovreignty just legal status as a principal occupying power. thats why the p.r.c. only threatens and demands taiwan. it doesnt dare attack because it would provoke the u.s. however, the u.s. said that because of there one china policy they would not defend taiwan if they declare independence. but i dont believe that. i cannot believe that the u.s. would stand by and let the p.r.c. just overrun taiwan.
the japs surrendered to the r.o.c. in 1945 but that merely tranferred military occupation from one to the other. that alone doesnt constitute sovreignty. so curently the issue of sovereignty remains uncertain.

TAIWAN is a independent COUNTRY; NOT a province of china. provinces don’t have presidents and their own currency; but taiwan has its own president and currency.

also, another point to be illustrated here: why would a country point missiles at themself? coz it’s a DIFFERENT COUNTRY.

stop lying to yourselves. face the truth, and accept the fact.

Just to set couple of things clear. I think taiwanese misunderstood me. What I am saying is ROC (中華民國) is a country and PROC(中華人民共和國)is a country. But Taiwan (台灣)is not a country it is only a province of ROC (中華民國).

I don’t quite understand the author’s logic. If there are 8 Criterias, they must be fulfilled to make Taiwan a Country. He got so many “Somewhat”s but still can conclude that Taiwan is a country! If the author is not stupid, he must be paid “somewhat” to say so.
Besides, No. 2 to 7 are bullshit. If transportation, education, population, public service can make a Country, there will be thousands of Countries in the World. On the other hand, poor people can never have a Country!

Currency? That is one point, but not always true. Like HK also has its own currency, while Europe use the same currency. “why would a country point missiles at themself”? America also got Civil War. It’s quite common that one country has more than one governments. They fight each other for the domination of the country.
Everyone knows the fact that PRC never takes control of Taiwan. But another government of China does. “Is Taiwan a Country?” Absolutely NOT. Taiwan belongs to China.
Someone do not feel happy to say “Taiwan is a province of China”. Because if there is a joint government, Taiwan should have a equal power as Beijing. If you think so, do not avoid, fight for it.

To those mainlander Chinese: Yeah, you say we’re your province. But what about our government? You kind of can’t ignore that. Heck, we even have our own political parties. Also, Zhou Ying, I’m sorry, but the first Taiwanese were more related to the Austronesian people than the Chinese. The Taiwanese and Chinese cultures, ancestors, languages, and history are different (though I myself am only a 外省人. It is not a fact that Taiwan is a province. Obviously, it’s disputed.

To Taiwanese: We really can’t say we’re a country yet. We can say that we have all the trappings of a country, and technically are one, but we’re not one yet until everyone, including the PRC, agrees.

I don’t see much the point of debating this is though. The question is, do want to be a country? I personally think that it would be better to be reunited with the PRC/PRC reunited with us. We, both PRC and ROC, have to stay united to keep strong. Remember the idiom, “渔翁得利?” (I might’ve typed that wrong).

Answering Guo’s questions with more questions:
1)What did the British do when Canada asked for independence? (Canada is an independent country, right? Although the British queen is still titled as our queen).
2)Did Enomoto Takeaki declared the independence of Hokkaido on behave of the native people of Hokaido[Ainu/Ezo), that is, to free them from Meiji Government, or was this act only for his own benefits? (if KMT declared the independence of Taiwan when they were defeated in 1949, then it would be the same thing, which is actually not that bad, since we all take advantage of the natives anyway(I am being sarcastic)… But they are all thickheaded a__holes who looked down on people already lived on Taiwan island for generations.)

For now, Taiwan is not a recognized country, but I hope it will be soon, because it already fulfilled all criteria that a nation required and more.

October 15, 2008 at 1:55 am
(49) Jessica says:

I believe that Taiwan is a part of china!!

Ok… reasons:

1)If Taiwan is an independent country, then there would be a foreign embassy of Taiwan in U.S. and all other countries, but there’s only the embassy of CHINA, not Taiwan!!
2) Taiwan has never formally declared themselves as an independent country, therefore it’s NOT AN INDEPENDENT COUNTRY.
3) for those of you who think that communism is bad, Taiwan should be a democracy, blah blah blah, well… Taiwan is not a democratic government, it’s a nationalism. And Taiwan ca n be like Hon Kong, one country two governments; China doesn’t have to rule over Taiwan like it does its own provinces.
4) Taiwan’s history is like this:
– communists and nationalists fight in China
– nationalists lost
– nationalist escaped to Taiwan
– they had human rights issues. (Forcing natives to speak mandarin, follow their government…)
So my point is, Taiwan has always rightfully been a part of China. Why do you guys think Taiwan is an independent country??
5)The U.S. has always covered for Taiwan, supporting its independence. I think that’s why so many of you think Taiwan is independent , is because the U.S. think so. America may have a lot of political influences around the world, but they can be wrong.

I’m Chinese :)

(52) someone says:

Hi
I just want to express what I think, do not mean to upset anyone okay.

I believe that Taiwan belongs to China for many years. The issue of Taiwan wanting to be independent has been not very long.

Many years ago China was targeted by many countries: like the Japanese and Europe countries, they wanted to take over China, but unfortunately they could not. During that time, Japanese controlled one of China’s states known as Taiwan. By 1949, when the Japanese gave back the island to China, people that live in Taiwan declare that they are not part of China. That they want to be independent. Now seriously, do you think this is right? Honestly.

If other states of China continue to be the same like Taiwan demanding to have its own country, do you think there will be anymore China?? It is like saying, Australia for example, Tasmania suddenly says they do not want to be part of Australia and wants to be an independent country. If Northern Territory, Queensland, New South Wales etc follows what Tasmania is doing (also becoming an independent country) then there won’t be anymore Australia.

There are many languages in China, it has been like this for many years, there are Hakka, the Cantonese, Mandarin, and lots more, but the most commonly use is Mandarin. Mandarin is a world wide language. There are different languages; there are low mandarin and high in all part of China, including Taiwan. Just because Taiwan has a different language, or sound that does not mean they are different from China.
Yes, communists back in China then were hard and poor, but the government used money for economic growth, for its people and for its country and look at China today. China and its people has overcome many hardships but they have made their country well, China now as you can see is spectacular, has step into a modern generation and succeeded many things. It is still communist today but at least there are more freedom than before, people is not as suffering much as before. Some China’s government are still corrupt but they are the lower government, the higher ones like the president are not corrupt. If he was corrupt and greed does you think there will be China today?

Well, that what I think about Taiwan and China. I hope I did not bore you from reading my views, if I did, sorry. I hope I did not upset some people. It is not like I do not care about your views and hate you or something. I believe everyone should love each other and understand each other.

(53) me, irene says:

There are always some odd arguments existing in the threads like this. Like, both Chinese are Taiwanese are mostly ethnically the same and talking in quite the same language, they should be one country. Last time i checked the UK and US are different countries. Or arguments like, they both inheritd Chinese culture, they should be one country. Last time I also checked, Singapore is an independent country, and Korean are clebrating Chinese New Year and worships Confucius. Or, Taiwan is recognized as a country by only 26 UN memebers, it’s not a country. Then what is the number of countries to be the legitimate “cutoff” for recognizing “countryship”. Taiwan is not a memebr of UN only becasue of China’s objection.
The truth is: if Taiwanese people want to be an independent country, he can decide their future by referendum. No other country should interfere. Last time I checked, Canada didn’t point their missles at Quebec when they had their independence referendum.
Chinese people should start learning to respect other people’s choices. I understand it’s not been in your culture and communism education, but it’s a good time to start to. Also, how told you once Taiwanese declare independence, they won’t be united with you someday in the future. Last time I still checked, there is only one Germany now.
For god sake, Chinese, try open your mind for a bit.

(54) curious george says:

Why does Taiwan need to declare independence? It IS a de facto independent country! Taiwan has everything a legitimate country should have. It is not like Tibet which is ruled (and suppressed) by Chinese. Taiwan’s only problem is that most countries in the world, for fear of China’s power, do not recognize her as a country. So by asking yourself the following you will know if Taiwan is a country: “are you a human being if most people say you’re not?”

———————-

I will dispute you point by point and tell you why you’re an idiot.

1.) Because your hostile government won’t let Taiwan

2.) Because your hostile government has pledged to kill Taiwanese people if they do so.

3.) This isn’t even a reason as to WHY a tract of land is a part of another country, it’s a very weak description of two forms of government. (Taiwan’s government is indeed a democracy though, just laced with extreme amounts of nationalism)

4.) Vague, SOMEWHAT accurate description. Neglects to mention the millions of Taiwanese inhabitants living there for years under older Chinese dynasties and later, the Japanese. (And if humans rights violations were a valid reason to deny the sovereignty of a nation, you most DEFINITELY lose.)

5.) That’s just laughable. Americans can be wrong but then again so can China. The reason why Americans view Taiwan as a de facto independent nation is because it IS one.

———————-

Simple Facts:

- Taiwan possesses its own government, military, economy, and territory.

- The People’s Republic of China has never set foot on Taiwanese soil.

- In fact, no Chinese government has ruled Taiwan since the end of the 19th century.

Conclusion:

You have a mediocre mind.

I just have one question and that’s all. It is in regards to products from Taiwan and China.

My question is this: Do many products that are manufactured in Taiwan say ‘Made in China’ on them?

This question stems from the fact that many products say ‘Made in China’ but I know they are manufactured by Taiwanese companies.

The answer is NO. Why would people do that? Chinese made products are not top notched in the world. Made in Taiwan products have much better reputation than those made in sorry China. In addition, it’s agaist trade law to masquerade the origin of products.

This question stems from the fact that many products say ‘Made in China’ but I know they are manufactured by Taiwanese companies.

Have you seen Dell or HP products labeled made in China? Most absolutely. For cheap labor, Taiwanese companies either outsouce their products or physically build procution lines somewhere in China. Same story.

(59) C.S. Haviland says:

The article is correct, Taiwan is a de-facto sovereign country. It does not need to declare independence as America did, because it did not ever belong to the government that currently rules mainland China. It is all that remains of the government that was forced out of mainland China by an enemy government, and which had previously overthrown the Empire of China.

People need to understand the difference between ethnic references and governmental references. Taiwan is called Republic of China, and the Mainland is currently called the People’s Republic of China. Just because they both use the word “China” does not mean they are the same country, but rather that they are the same ethnic group.

Should the Taiwanese government allow itself to merge with the People’s Republic of China, such that they become answerable to and taxable by the PROC, with constitutional documentation, only then will they become a “province of China.” (A possibility that is favored by their current President, although not traditionally favored by a majority of the Taiwanese people.)

Until then, we must ignore such political definitions as “One China Policy” as these are accepted by the U.N. and the U.S. and other countries to keep Taiwan from being attacked by the mean-spirited PROC. The position of the U.S. on this matter is superficial in order to keep the peace, it is not a de-facto recognition. Actually the U.S. has an agreement to defend Taiwan militarily in the event that PROC attacks it; not something the U.S. would do if Taiwan were officially recognized as a province of China. The PROC’s claims are empty and false, and they have bullied the U.N. into excluding Taiwan a seat, which is appalling.

(60) Fair trade says:

I am a Chinese living in Canada and I am trying to see the issue in a bystander’s view.
I think the reason behind all this argument is the difference between PRC and ROC and has been over the last 100 so years.

First of all, I think taiwanese people(some) should stop their rude comments about mainland China. It’s true currently Taiwan is better than mainland in many ways, but China is developing. It will be better. China has the fastest developing rate than any other country, Many countries fear China because it is indeed very powerful and has a lot of potential to be better. The only reason Taiwan is better than China is because China has way to many people, it is of course easier to make a 23 million people land

Second, I think many chinese are too narrow minded about this issue. It is true chinese government has a lot of influence on people of china’s minds. Before I came to Canada, I too was very narrow minded and is offended by anything against China. It is true there has been many pressure from the chinese government to other countries and the ROC. Chinese should accept the fact that Taiwan is different and independent and not China’s to control. However, it is not a different country either (no official document, sorry to disappoint some ppl)

Lastly, I truly think PRC and ROC should work together. They are like opposite forces, but together, they can be very powerful. Although looking from now, that is quite hard. chinese people and taiwanese people are very ‘disgusted’ by each other, trying to claim things for their own. But in reality, if ppl would be a little more open-minded, they will see that both has goods and bads. And working together would solve many unnecessary problems.

PPl! dont post rude comments about each other. Even if you swear your mind away, this issue is still going to be decided by PRC and ROC themselves. I know everyone is patriotic to their own ‘country’ but we have to be open-minded and see the real problem.

(61) motherland says:

From China’s perspective, there is only one China in the world. Taiwan has been a part of China for hundreds of years. They speak the same language, celebrate the same festivals, and have almost the same culture.

The present situation of separation between Taiwan and China mainland is the result of Civil War of China(or Liberation War of China 1946-1950). The former government of China, the KMT party government, fled to Taiwan island because of the total defeat in the mainland. Meanwhile, Communist China had no ability to cross the strait to reunite Taiwan island at that time. In China’s view, the problem of Taiwan and China not already being reunited is due to interference from the U.S. government.

In 1949, the Chinese government announced that Taiwan is a province of China. Since then, all the countries which want to establish a foreign relationship with PRC must recognize that Taiwan’s belonging to China. The UN also recognizes that Taiwan belongs to China.

In Taiwan’s society today, DPP politicians who are absolute supporters of Taiwan’s independence are in control, but a number of Taiwanses people believe there is only one China and that Taiwan is part of it.

For economic reasons, as well as avoiding war, Taiwan should not be independent. Only the reunification of Taiwan with China will give Taiwan a more broader future. It is advantagous to mainland China that reunification with Taiwan take place because the Taiwanese people speak standard Chinese and know deeply about China. Mastering Chinese will be rather important in the future. So Taiwan maintaining a close relationship with mainland China will be the best what it can be.

The United Kingdom does not recognise Taiwan as a state and does not have diplomatic relations with Taiwan. The United Kingdom considers the Taiwan issue is one to be settled by the people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait. We are strongly opposed to any use of force and urge both sides to engage in constructive dialogue.

The United Kingdom enjoys a flourishing relationship with Taiwan based on trade, investment, financial, educational, cultural and other exchanges. The information provided below and all references to Taiwan and the Taiwan authorities should be read in this context.”

At that time, Americans did not like communists either. But now, most people know it is not that bad. There are good and bad things about communists. Anyways, American backed you up and let you into the UN. While you were at the UN, China didnt really care about invading you all not AND THAT DOESNT MEAN YOU ARE NOT PART OF CHINA, CAUSE YOU STILL ARE. Anyways, when PRC has grew its country [ the economic and country] UN invited China join in. China said you want me to go in, you take taiwan out of the UN, because taiwan was and still is part of us. So taiwan got out. AND NOW they say China is bullying Taiwan and controlling them and not letting them be a country…. right…… HAVE YOU FORGOTTEN YOU ARE STILL PART OF CHINA NOT LONG AGO, WELL CERTAINLY CHINA HAVE NOT HAVE THEY??
Anyways, expressing my views between China and taiwan is interesting and I know this will go on and on wateva. I want to tell you guys something. And UK built democratic society there, that’s why you need visa to go there.

There are always some odd arguments existing in the threads like this.
For god sake, Chinese, try open your mind for a bit.”

some people said “Chinese, try open your mind for a bit.” and taiwanese want be a country, so China should let them go( sorry i really think there’s only one China).
let me give you guys a example, why example, because you guys really only see the surface on the taiwan problem, i just want make it clear
here we go the example:

if you own a house in NewYork, unfortunately you are working in another place, so you are not living in your house. then one day, a man(i’ll call he/she “A”) break into your house and set up everything they need, just like normal family, he pay fees now, and live like really normal person. and then one day you go to NewYork and find that your house has been taken by A. what would you think. will you say A really need that house,he really dont want be part of you, so pleas let him go, be humanbeing to him. that house is not yours any more. what would you think?

i know you may say you got proof that says the house is yours. but unfortunately again, in the really world, proof is not work in everything. it just like history. we know it is, but we doing in different way. what is really work? power, really, if China was weaker, then i believe taiwan is a country now, in the other way, if China is powerful enough, then taiwan is a province of China. its just that simple. finally, taiwan never became a country, and will never become if China have power to control taiwan

(81) Formosa forever an island nation says:

Taiwan or Formosa was actually “discovered” by the Portugese in the 16th Century and later was colonized by the Dutch. There was an indigenous population distinctively different from those of Han Chinese dated as far back as several thousand years. The only tie China has with Taiwan was established during the Ching Dynasty in the 18th Century because of rebel army from Fujian Province fled to the island, which forced the Manchu army to attack Taiwan to get rid of renegade militia. Before that event, Taiwan and China were basically two separate world due to the body of water call the Taiwan Strait, which acted as a natural obstacle for Chinese, who were not interested in oversea land mass because they were perceived as barbaric, uncultured and therefore un-chinese in nature. Chinese have historically refer to Japanese sailors as pirates of short stature and likewise Taiwanese were not perceived like Chinese people. That is the true history between the people on the either sides of the Taiwan Strait. Why in the 20 century Chinese government claimed that Taiwan is part of China due to history is puzzling since they have always viewed it in the past as an outer region unworthy of being part of Chinese world. The reason, one and only, greed. Taiwanese people enjoy a standard of living that is 10X better than Chinese in terms of per capita income. The communist population is so desperate for anything monetary that they will pretend that a different race is their own people in order to reap the benefits. In fact, they don’t see Taiwanese as the Chinese race, that’s why they have been so cruel and hostile to them both politically and socially.

Now ‘C’ sees T’s new condo is much better and has better tenant, they wanted to move it as well. So can C call it their house? (87) CS Haviland says:

Again, most of the comments here seem to be confusing ethnicity with governmental rule. The PROC of mainland China is a government, and that government does not and never has had any powers over the ROC of Taiwan.

The reason Taiwan is called Republic of China is not because it used to belong to China, it’s because the government evolved from what used to occupy mainland China, and were chased out by the PROC.

Think of it this way: supposing the US attacked Canada and took over all its provinces, but the Canadian government fled to Prince Edward Island and the US did not attack and take over Prince Edward Island. So Prince Edward Island is all that is left of the Canadian government of the past, and the rest of Canada then belongs to the US.

Now suppose Canada became called the United States of Canada and Prince Edward Island became called the Republic of Canada. Just because they both use the word “Canada” doesn’t mean that the government called Republic of Canada ever belonged to the U.S. Rather, it is all that is left of what used to be the old Canadian government.

OK, this is an absurd scenario that will never happen, but in theory, years from now, the US cannot claim Prince Edward Island as a “renegade province” of the US just because they failed to take it during the war. If Prince Edward Island continued to develop into a thriving government of its own, completely independently of the US, it is its own government, and would have no need to declare independence from anything.

What muddies the waters about the PROC is that this was not a foreign invader but rather the result of a civil uprising against the government of the time. But the establishment of the PROC created a new government that is not to be confused with the one it replaced, who fled to Taiwan. The people are the same ethnicity but the governments are completely different.

Guys, what ever way you look at this, I can’t see how Taiwan is part of China.
My wife is Taiwanese, hence I have family & friends out there, & I work for a Global Chinese Company (Huawei), hence I have many Chinese friends & Co-workers) so I’d like to think that I understand the attitudes of both people.
1st; let’s look at the Taiwanese people. As a frequent visitor, I have yet to find a Taiwanese citizen who considers them self Chinese, they are strongly nationalist to there country of Taiwan, In fact they have gone to the lengths to change the Mandarin language to a Taiwanese dialect & have even renamed the Ho Kin language to Taiwanese; Of cause buy race they are Chinese, however there are Chinese people in Indonesia, Singapore, America, Taiwan..this does not mean that they are all citizens of the China.

Tell me how many American Military bases are there in China? 0
Taiwan: several

Do Chinese people need a visa to visit the UK? yes
Taiwanese? No

Do Taiwanese need a Visa to visit China? yes
Visa-versa? Yes (different to Honk Kong where you need a pass, but not a Visa)

Does Taiwan’s have it’s own Capitalist economy, Democratically elected Government, Military, Currency, Passport, & foreign offices across the world representing Taiwan? YES; & all which are completely independent from China, where China has no say on the above? The answer is always yes & the list goes on.

Taiwan may have been named a s an Ancient province but that does not mean that’s politically relevant today. There are may examples of borders changing after World war 2, e.g Turkey & Greece are new. There are also areas of today’s China which Historically don’t belong to China.
One of the fundamental definitions of a country is, who do they consider them selves to be. That is why the UK holds on to the Falklands, it is also the reason why Northern Ireland is still part of the UK & not Ireland. If 22,920,946 people consider them selves Taiwanese & not Chinese, then they are Taiwanese.

Sorry if this disappoints the Chinese readers, but it’s true.

Recently negotiations have happened on the Visa issue between the 2 countries, hopefully this sort of diplomacy will continue.

(92) Neutral says:

Reading all the comments now, there seems to be a common misconception here.
Many people seem to think that, 1949 is the milestone, where Taiwan belonged to China before the Japs took control. So after WW2 when the communists won the civil war in 1949, Taiwan was to go back to China, & just because the loosing side fled to Taiwan, that does not make Taiwan a Country.

The problem with argument, is that China signed ownership of Taiwan over to Japan 1895 when they lost the war.

However in defiance the officials of Taiwan declared the Independent State of, The Republic of Formosa, which was supported by the Qing Dynasty.

However This new Republic only lasted 5 months as the Japanese landed, & slowly moved South crushing all resistance.

In 1943 the R.O.C, was recognised as the controllers of Taiwan, at the Cairo Declaration.

OK after WW2, with water under the Bridge, The Red Arm won the fight for the mainland in 1949, (& plundered the country into ruins with hard line communism), while the defeated Capitalists fled back to Taiwan to continue the R.O.C, along with many people fearful of the new Communist Regime.

As you can see China does not have a legal strong hold of Taiwan, also bye viewing all the comments above, you can also see that it is not practical to say Taiwan is a province of China.

It simply isn’t, because it isn’t!
Taiwan belongs to the R.O.C, which has several Islands making up the Country, Taiwan being the biggest.

Please don’t reply saying yes but what about Taiwan not having embassy’s in other countries. We know what the answer is. We all know that a Taiwanese person going in to a Chinese embassy in the UK or where ever, will not be recognised in a Chinese embassy. & we are also all aware of the Bulling tactics that China adopts on other nations, no body wants to upset big brother. If China, says Tibet, the Muslims in the North West, or Taiwan is part of China; Who’s going to say no? Their citizens certainly aren’t aloud to!

Have you ever seen a parent hold back its child because the parent had their own ambitions?

Have you ever seen a chinese parent hold back its own child because the parents had their own ambitions?

Have you ever seen what the child becomes because it was told all of its life what to do how to think?

China, let your people have access to free speech, when you read all these comments by mainlanders, you cant help but think that they are the product of limited news outlets, seriously a country like yours would be revered if it gave back clarity and dignity to its own people. I dont know why you fear your own people so much. ( this is the point where all the mainlanders tell us how much our media outlets are flawed in comparison to the governement only media in china, lol, dont even start )

And Taiwan, stop talking so much shit, declare your independence and get ready for a fight. Stop the talk, and lets fight. Its either talk it out or get the fight on to settle the dispute.

We all understand that China has done everything at the cost of other countries economies to give native Chinese an advantage in its own domestic market. I for one see nothing wrong with that, however, all things change, and one must embrace a form of globalism, and believe in competition.

Do not seek to lecture others when introspection, wisdom, and respect are probably the characteristics that would benefit China the most.

Who said China cannot be the great power of the 21st century and break the mold about what greatness should be? Instead, you already see stupid petty fighting between US, China. Drop your insecurities, do whats right for your own people and keep it moving.

I believe Taiwan IS in fact a country. I was born in Taipei, and, unlike what Chinese people say, I believe Taiwan DOESN’T share 100% of culture with China. There are 3 things that separate us from China:
1. Japanese Influence and love
2. Manners and Hygenes + tone of voice
3. Living style + personality.

Taiwan is the reason why I, a Japanese Taiwanese, can stay in Taiwan, for there is LESS racism against the Japanese culture, infact many people think Japanese people are cool here, unlike China.

Keep Taiwan a de facto independant country please.

To all the people living in PRC, Please answer this question from me, a Malaysian Chinese.

1) PRC has military forces, ROC has it right?

2) PRC can issue their own passports, ROC can also, right?

3) PRC has an effective government, and a stabilized human resource that permanent stayed in the region, as well as a defined territorial limit.

ROc also has them, right?

4)Can you use ROC issued driving license in PRC? Since they are in the “same country”?

5) If you are PRC resident, can you NOT use a passport to come visit ROC? I challenge you to say this to ROC immigration officer, “Heck, I’m travelling domestic, I don’t need no passport!” and see how they kick your ass into Taiwan strait.

The only reason why Taiwan was being bullied by China, is because Taiwan doesn’t possess Nuclear Weapons.

I fully support Taiwan to develop their nuclear programme. I am sure that will shut PRC up for good.

It’s really useless to argue whether Taiwan belongs to China. Both sides won’t agree with each other.(at least, so far it seems like this) Don’t forget that some countries are happy to see this situation. They sell their weapons to Taiwan to increase their GDP. They want the argument to restrict the development of mainland China. They pretend to be concerned about the affair so that they can send their army to Taiwan Strait. You can go on arguing. Nevertheless, neither of the two sides can get benefit. I think, no matter which side hold the truth, you should always be careful about ‘some countries’.

Yes and most artifacts in the Forbidden City was hidden saftly in Taiwan! China is a piece of sh*t. Taiwan has it’s own currency. As Abraham Lincoln said -”You cannot build character and courage by taking away man’s initiative and independence.” There for China is a chicken and has no honor what so ever. Taiwan must be broken free from it’s chains and announce to the world that it is it’s own. China is a coward and so is the US they just cannot admit that Taiwan is its OWN COUNTRY! Now I believe that Taiwan is formally adressed as The Republic of China right? Yes, however China is formally adressed as the People’s Rupublic of China. Let me clarify… is this the same??? NOO! China is a failed country, Mainlanders got brainwashed so much that they think their leader is Jesus and he will lead them to control the world.

They can’t accept the fact that Taiwan is already a free country and Taiwaneses don’t want to be a part of their shitty communist country.

They think they are tough and they keep threatening to invade Taiwan yet they got owned by the Japaneses and couldn’t do anything about it. Well, except brainwashing little kids to hate Japaneses or writing fantasy novels about invading Japan and the rest of the world. Quit daydreaming for God sake! You lost, the war is over. Get over it and move on!

Everytime I see a Mainlainer or a North Korean wearing a little picture of their Leader on their shirt, I can’t stop laughing. What kind of idiots got brainwashed that much ? Go outside and see the world!

Well now, the world accepts the fact that America is a bully, but at least it’s a real tiger. Japan attacked Pearl Harbor and America nuked Japan back. Terrorists just destroyed the Twin Towers and America invaded the Middle East right away. We hate the Americans but we also fear them.

What about China ? China is like a failed version of the US. China also looks tough and acts tough, but all it can do is talk and whine, like an old paper tiger.

You guys have nukes and the largest army in the world. If you want it so bad, then nuke Japan for revenge, take Taiwan back by force, then invade the rest of Asia whatever. Then you can become a real tiger like you claim.

(110) Andy says:

“2)in school do you study Confusis?
” (By Pierre Chen)

I think I must retort your views. First, we do study Confusius in China’s schools, and it begins at primary schools. We study “Lunyu 論語”(it was by Confusius) and even a 7-year-old child knows “學而時習之,不亦說乎”, “三人行,必有我師焉”, etc. We do cherish our ancestors’ culture and we’ve learnt it well.

Second, I just want say, the Simplified Chinese is not to destroy Chinese culture. Why? Have you ever heard about the cursive style in Chinese(草書,草體), Wang Xizhi(王羲之) is a role model to write it. And, the cursive style has a long history and it is also an important part of chinese culture. The simplified Chinese was reformed from the cursive style and none of the Chinese characters of the simplified Chinese is really creatived by us.
The traditional Chinese is difficult to write and the people of China has wanted to make it easy then, what reasons could you to negate the simplified Chinese? And even said it was to destroy Chinese culture?
So, please don’t get so confident for how much Chinese culture Taiwan has, and said that Taiwan was a country. It isn’t, never, at least the UN(includes the USA) doesn’t admit its existion!

Hence, asking me to refer myself from China is ridiculous. People ask me, “Really? So what’s good in Beijing, China?” I wouldn’t know. If it’s Taipei, Taiwan you’re talking about, I can go on forever. My point is, regardless of where my ancestors are from, my heart is always with Taiwan. Why? Because it’s my motherland, it’s where all my family, relatives and childhood memories are. It’s the culture in Taiwan that educated and shaped me into the person I am today.

(113) Marcel says:

As someone in Europe I think I can reply in a neutral way.

Taiwan is definetly a country.
It is a free democratic country where the people choose their leaders.

It is sovereign.
Communist China has NOTHING to say in Taiwan so it is not a province. The PROC never had any power over Taiwan.
The only ones who have something to say in Taiwan are the Taiwanese.
The fact that China claims it is irrelevant. North Korea claims South Korea but does that mean that South Korea is not a sovereign nation? Kosovo is claimed by Serbia but is sovereign.
BTW the ROC also still claims mainland China, does that mean that the PROC is not sovereign?
If the ROC is not sovereign then neither is the PROC.

The ROC used to have control over all of China. The PROC is a nation that was established later. It NEVER had control over Taiwan. So the ROC has more rights to claim mainland China then the PROC has to claim Taiwan.

Taiwan also has its own military, currency, economy (diffirent from PROC), passports and diplomatic relations.
Provinces don’t have any of those.

It definetly has more rights to be recognised then Kosovo.

Why couldn’t there be 2 China’s? We also have 2 Koreas.
The languge they speak is irrelevant. Do all Spanish speakig countries belong to Spain? Do all German speaking nations belong to Germany?
It says on the passport Republic of China (unofficially referred to as Taiwan to avoid confusion), not PEOPLE’S Republic of China, so it definetly does not belong to the People’s Republic of China (unofficially referred to as China.

If we (the west) would only recognise 1 China it should be the ROC since its leaders are democraticly elected. Elected by the people which gives it more rights to be recognised then the PROC dictatorship.
The government of the ROC has a legal mandate from the people, unlike that of the PROC.

Nations that don’t recognise Taiwan only do so because they are afraid of China. Afraid of economic sanctions.
I think both USA and EU are cowardy in this, they should together recognise Taiwan as an independant nation.
No way China could do sanctions on all of Europe and the US. Who else would buy their cheap products? Without the west they are nothing.

China might want to invade it just like they invade and oppress Tibet.
Fortunatly Taiwan is under protection of the US.
I think the US and/or NATO should build establish military bases there to protect the democratic nation against communist agression. We should help them to defend freedom and democracy.

I think that we should go even further and that NATO should be expended with other free democratie nations outside of Europe/America. These would include Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, Israel, Australia and New Zealand.
Although perhaps we should give NATO a new name then as it would no longer be only atlantic.

With Taiwan as a NATO member communist China would not dare agression against the peacefull nation.

(116) Ming people says:

What is Taiwan’s relationship to mainland China?
In 1949, a group of Chinese who opposed the Communist revolution on mainland China, fled to the island of Formosa and established the Republic of China, also known as Taiwan. Led by Chiang Kai-shek, the group formed the Chinese Nationalist government. The United Nations, United States, and many other countries recognized Taiwain as being the rightful government of the Chinese people.
In 1971 the mainland People’s Republic of China gained recognition from the international community and took over Taiwain’s seat in the United Nations. Today, Taiwan lacks international recognition or a seat in the United Nations and is considered by China to be a wayward province. Thus, the status of Taiwan has yet to be resolved.

This website is totally mistaken.

Countries around the world accept the Taiwan Passport, that’s weird don’t you think? If taiwanese people can print their own passport and claim it’s legitimate?

Why do the majority population dislike the Chinese?

China is a communist country, why is Taiwan’s democracy allowed if it is part of China?

———————————————————————–

Anyways, I am not saying communism is bad all the time. It is needed for countries that are not civilized enough to know right from wrong, or left from right. Therefore more control is needed within the country as guidance. Without communism in mainland china there would be massive chaos.

The comments went like this:

1. Taiwanese saying they are independent
2. Chinese saying they own Taiwan
3. Taiwanese saying they own Taiwan

heres what i think is a good analogy:

In a town of 60,000, there is a successful restaurant that happens to be the only restaurant in the town. They have good buiness, and opened a smaller version in a nearby town of 5,000. The small restaurant over time develops its own menu with its own prices, and even its own manager. It even goes under a new name, and is doing very well. This restaurant wants to have its own stock, but the larger restaurant is enraged. It demands that, because it has the papers to prove it, that the smaller restaurant be considered as part of it. The smaller restaurant responds, saying that has everything it needs to be its own. Who is right?

One of the owner of the larger restaurant got into a fight over the shares, so this owner bail out and went open a new restaurant with some chefs from the previous restaurant.

The small restaurant faced some hostile takeover but eventually to stay on track and has some loyal customer with fine dishes to offer.

The larger restaurant wants a piece of this success, so they are calling this small restaurant their own. Yes, the people, the owner were from the large restaurant, but not longer the same restaurant.

political unification = taiwan comes up with a new state flag,( replace the red, blue, white flag – roc flag) and also use the ” china ” flag .

a bad scenario = even if taiwan, somehow , get political seperation from china…..

there could be backlashes in both, military conflicts
and peaceful means ( us intervention, armed taiwan with tactical nuclear missles, for the 2nd time….)

peaceful means = china taxes taiwan to the death….

For all the arguments the reality is this:

De Facto, Taiwan is a country. (i.e it has a separate government, separate military, dependent but separate economy and currency, even a different flag)

Technically, it is not. (China never ceded, nor has the UN recognized Taiwan a country. More importantly, Taiwan itself has never formally declared independence from China)

In fact, the ROC still officially lays claim to the mainland, although they do not contest China for administration. This shows that officially Taiwan still sees itself as part of the mainland, just not part of the administrating government on the mainland.

To be honest, I personally think we should respect Taiwanese’ choice.

If a group of people do not identify themselves as part of another group. So what’s the point to force them to? They consider themselves as Chinese race, that’s enough.

I am also always curious about that why so many chinese people wish to make your sistors and brothers (since we always claim so) involved into the communist government we already suffer so much? Since they have the choices to live their happy lives, why do we still want Taiwan to be part of PRC. We should congratulate them and wish them happy lives! Oh…yeah… I know why. because we are jealous that they can make their own choices, but we can’t.

Also, don’t be brainwashed by the education. The real patriotism I believe is the spontaneous love and loyalty for China, rather than a certain party ( here is the communist). CHINA IS OUR COUNTRY. Our country is the one which exists for thousands of years, it’s the place where our ancestors and we live (or once lived), other than PRC, which may only exist for several decades (or a little longer).

This sounds a little weird to Chinese people become we have only one party, so many of us, I guess, kind of misunderstood the concepts of China and PRC. Actually, US is a good way to show the concepts. Americans love their country, but not a certain party. Their country has a history of several hundreds years just with different servants to run the country (parties).

The government should function as servant rather than dictator. It’s good that Taiwan people can choose their own servant. I am really jealous of you guys. Best wishes to you.

“What is all this hate you have for Taiwan?” We don’t hate Taiwan, on the contrary, we love it, that’s why we don’t want to “lose” it.

For those who think that Taiwan is part of China, clearly you either didn’t do well in Taiwanese or Chinese history, or, you are very hard-headed. Taiwan is not a part of China, it was once part of China, but it isn’t now. This goes back to 1895 when China and Japan were in he First Sino-Japanese War, Japan won and asked for some things. One of them was Taiwan and other little islands forever. To make it more clear, Japan owns them forever as long as Japan wants it. Later on in World War II, Japan lost and China asked for Taiwan. Now, remember that China was called Republic of China by then, it was ruled by a different government from now.

And then what happened was the current government of China and the government of China by then had war, the current government won and they called China People’s Republic of China; this nation is different from Republic of China. That’s what happened to the original China(Republic of China). But what about the government? The original government ran to Taiwan and ruled Taiwan, because that was the land that they actually owned because Japan gave Taiwan to Republic of China(ROC), not People’s Republic of China. And ROC didn’t disappear because they lost the war, they just ran to their land and ruled it. And the ROC is what is better known as Taiwan.

Those of you who say that Taiwanese people share the same ancestors as Chinese people, then here are two words for you:Too Bad! Sharing the same ancestors doesn’t equal to same nation. If same ancestors equal to same nation, then he U.S. would be part of U.K., wouldn’t it? Or all the Americans that are Chinese descendants are Chinese Absolutely not! Race doesn’t equal to nationality.

I am Taiwanese-American. I will look at this objectively.

From the world’s perspective:
UN does not recognize Taiwan as a country. Most of the world doesn’t either. Reasons? China is a economic/technological powerhouse. Logically, one would side with China. The US has a history of siding with country it would benefit most from.

(144) Random Reader says:

From China’s perspective:
I’ve read many of the Chinese arguments for Taiwan being a part of China. Frankly, they have no solid reason for their view besides the fact that their government and school teaches them that way; therefore, it must be fact. But, I will point out some reasons that China believes Taiwan is part of China.

Reason: We share the same culture/heritage.
Counter: True, but US, Korea, Canada, Ukraine, Belgium, and many others are prime example of why this argument is invalid. Also, Tibet does not share the same culture as the rest of China, yet it is still considered to be a part of China.

Reason: China never allowed Taiwan to split off.
Counter: The Chinese Communist Party (CCP) chased the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) out of power. The KMT then fled to Taiwan where they set up their own government.

Reason: By letting Taiwan be independent, other provinces would aspire to do the same, thus creating anarchy.
Counter: All of China’s other provinces haven’t established a fully working government as Taiwan has. If Taiwan can even be considered a province, it would be one with a government on the opposite side of the spectrum from China’s overall government.

Reason: If Taiwan can be considered a country, couldn’t many other small states declare independence?
Counter: Not true, Taiwan meets almost all of the requirements except for the fact that many other countries, including the UN, does not recognize Taiwan as a country. For this point, I explained in the very first paragraph.

From Taiwan’s perspective:
We have held a working government for many decades, one that is Democratic, whereas, China has one that is Communist . Although not as strong as China’s, we are also one of the economic/technological powerhouses of Asia. We meet all the requirements except we don’t hold the leverage needed for the acceptance of other countries. Almost all 23 million of our citizens believe that we are a country, separate and independent from China.

Honestly, the only thing that is holding Taiwan back from becoming a “country” is recognition. People talk about embassies and the UN but that all connects back to recognition. Taiwan is not recognized. That is all.

I love Taiwan. I am forever Taiwanese. I believe Taiwan is a country.

At least Taiwan is better off to get soaked in by China that way they might recover from their inherent, incurable inferiority complex.

Simple as that.

I am a mainland chinese. i think what makes taiwanese hate being part of china is because china is a communist country and china is not freedom and developed as japan. i think if china is the same as japan in terms of developed, taiwanese may willing to accept they belong to china. what makes the fact now is all because of the chinese government and the communist.

now what the westerners people and taiwanese should know is that fewer and fewer people in mainland china respect their communist government because they are kind people just like taiwanese or westerners.most bad habit the chinese people have comes from the education that communist government taught while most chinese people themselves are kind.

so in terms of this issue, i think taiwan is part of ROC not PRC, i understand that taiwanese want to independent, so if the majority of you want to be independent, that is fine, but in this case taiwan is departed from ROC. taiwan and mainland china in history sometimes are one country but sometimes not, so the independent of taiwan not really matters, maybe someday china becomes democracy and a good country in most aspects, taiwan could be a part of china again. what now really matters is help china out of control by the communist government and teach people here the right value(for example—polite, free idea, open minded), i think china has a long way to go and we really should learn something from other developed countries such as japan , US, or even the taiwan).

some people in mainland is indeed hate westerners( just some), they think china is so powerful as if we can control the whole world, but most rational chinese know it is ridiculous. what we need is to be a respected and responsible developed country which is helpful to the world.

We had a Taiwanese neighbour before and he told us that Taiwan is the rebel territory of China. Two Chinese political party, one failed in the civil war and went to Taiwan, now claims that Taiwan is an independent country.

Political thing, isn’t it…

Taiwan have be threated by China for a long period of time.Over the years China had always got bombs that are points towards Taiwan and as the years gone by the numbers of bombs had increase from 100+ to 1000+,so if we formally declared independence from China they WILL destroy Taiwan. Understand?!

Why is there no Embassy in US and UK of Taiwan(ROC)?
As I said, if we formally declared independence from China they will bomb us, and having a embassy that says “Taiwan” on it in a International country like UK is not a very good idea :) .

then WHY it says ROC on the passort than ?
ROC, Republic Of China.
I personally does not like this name because it confusses people who does not know alot of this about Taiwan.
ROC and PRC where uesd to be together……hard to expain, check out this story..
One of the owners of the larger restaurant got into a fight over the shares, so these owners bail out and went open a new restaurant with some chefs from the previous restaurant.
The small restaurant faced some hostile takeover but eventually to stay on track and has some loyal customer with fine dishes to offer.
The larger restaurant wants a piece of this success, so they are calling this small restaurant their own. Yes, the people, the owner were from the large restaurant, but no longer the same restaurant.

thats the story, the larger restaurant is China and Taiwan is the small one :) xxx

What the Chinese think don matter, it will not change the fact. You Chinese will need to apply visa and use PRC passport to enter Taiwan, ROC, which you guys claim is part of your land. Funny…

China never treat Taiwan as part of itself. Various threatens, less support and little friendly diplomatic talks.

Chinese are so arrogant because they think they are strong, and being happy in a censorship.

Taiwan, ROC now cannot fight with China, and is not strong enough; thus you Chinese are bullshiting like hell. I admit China is strong, and that has nothing to do with this issue.

(155) Taiwanese American says:

Taiwan was never a country. It has always been and still is a province of China. This was never a problem until the 八国联军 when eight industrialized nations came together and completely sacked China who was already weakened by the crafty opium imports by the British.

After being pummeled by the eight world powers, China was basically at their mercy so they carved it all up and divided it. Taiwan went to Japan.

After the ROC’s efforts to rid China of foreign influences and finally the PRC’s victory over Japan, the ROC attacked the PRC and started a civil war for power over the newly liberated “territories” of China. Since President Jiang was a sneaky bastard and used most of the US anti-Japan military aid against the PRC, support for the ROC declined and went to the PRC that promoted how hard they fought against the Japanese and how much they sacrificed. That led to the PRC’s victory over the ROC who then fled to Taiwan. Chairman Mao having been close to President Jiang over the second Sino-Japanese war decided to pardon him and the ROC, let them exile to Taiwan and solve that issue later once China was stable again. His mistake was not forcing President Jiang to sign a treaty to officially declare that the ROC lost because he wanted to spare him from that kind of humiliation.

July 9, 2012 at 3:52 pm
(156) Taiwanese American says:

From then on the PRC recollected all the broken pieces left by Imperialism and began rebuilding a strong China but President Jiang the whole time was making deals with western powers to be the official “China” in the UN. He used the technicality that he never officially lost the civil war to say that the war was still going on. He then used the ties he had with the UN and US to set up a take back the mainland campaign and kept attacking the Fujian border Taiwan shares with the mainland claiming that the real China is and will always be the ROC because “they hadn’t lost yet.” Finally in 1970 all the major European powers realized how stupid it was to have a tiny island represent all of China and in a landslide vote they gave China Taiwan’s spot in the UN. Without their diplomatic relations with those powers, the ROC had nothing left to do and their campaign was pretty much done for. No more take back the mainland.

July 9, 2012 at 3:52 pm
(157) Taiwanese American says:

Jump to modern times and you have the establishment of the Democratic Progressive Party in Taiwan which is a party founded by Chinese born in Taiwan that consider themselves Taiwanese only. Under their leaders they started a hugely laughable campaign for Taiwanese Independence that’s supported (unofficially) by America and Japan. The support lets them reach everybody around the world so it gives the impression that most Taiwanese want to be independent from China but really none of us want that. They argue that since China lost Taiwan to Japan after the fall of the Qing Dynasty and that Japan returned it to the ROC that only the ROC ever ruled Taiwan not the PRC. But now that the PRC still hasn’t officially taken power in Taiwan and it is still under the ROC, these DPP guys want to get rid of the ROC and create a Taiwan country by saying it was always Taiwan never Taiwan, China. Many lolcat points for coming up with that idea.

The ROC still believes in the “One China Policy” and all educated Taiwanese people still get that we’re Chinese but since China doesn’t really get the whole propaganda stuff they don’t really promote their side of things to the west and all we hear over here is that China is bad, it violates human rights, its communist and evil and blah blah blah. They also kinda headhunt after the Chinese mainlanders that got screwed over in the Cultureal Revolution and get them to help them with the anti-China propaganda. So in the west, you hear how China is terrible and everybody wants to leave and Taiwan wants to break free from the “corruption of the CCP” w/e. In reality China’s got as much corruption and human rights violations as any other major country in the world and the majority of all the people that “want to be free” actually don’t. ex: Tibetans are happy not to be in a slave society under the Dalai lama. China just doesn’t know how to promote this stuff in the media.

(158) Oh for the love of pete! says:

I’m loving how one of the most common arguments here is that most ROC are called 外省人 and that means that Taiwanese are still Taiwanese and not Chinese. For anybody who knows Chinese at all tell me what that middle word is. Let me tell everybody who doesn’t know. That word 省 means province. So when these Taiwan people keep saying 外省人 they mean to say the ROC are people from a foreign PROVINCE. If Taiwan was a country these people keep claiming it is why keep calling “foreigners from China” people from other provinces? Why not call them 外国人 which means foreign COUNTRY? You guys crack me up how badly you fail your own terminology is fighting against you. The Taiwanese locals came up with 外省人 a long time ago to refer to the ROC because not all of them were from the province of Taiwan. If you guys were really your own country you’d call them 外国人 like you would for ANY OTHER COUNTRY. Smoking gun. Game.

July 9, 2012 at 4:25 pm
(159) Reason says:

You know it’s a really lame argument to say Taiwan is a country cuz it has its own govt. The only reason it has its own govt is because the ROC ran there when it LOST. You know when normal people lose a war they admit defeat. But the ROC were retarded and kept going because the PRC didn’t just rub it out like the stain it was and decided to spare it. You guys do get that right? If the PRC pushed it all the way into one tiny little island there was nothing stopping it from just going all the way. It jsut didn’t want to exterminate its own people especially old war buddies fighting against japan. Geez it’s looks like being decent actually screwed China in the end.

Taiwan is NOT a country, because after the civil war of China during later 1940s, the Kuomintang(KMT) lost the control of China, and the KMT moved their goverment to Taiwan Province. Then the People’s Republic Of China (PRC) was found in1949, so the KMT goverment can’t represent China any more, Republic of China now the past tense, it can’t represent the Taiwan, because ROC did NOT take the control of China. So at this point that the ROC can’t represent Taiwan as a ‘ Offical Nation Name’. Also Taiwan can’t stand on it own by a nation as well because that Taiwan is historily belong to China, and Taiwan don’t have a agree of the other countries and organization( like UN) as a independent country. Other thing I need to clarify to everyone. That PRC is a very internationalization nation, China is democracy country based on socialism. Believe that if you been to PRC you will fell amazing about the fast pace in China.

Also, Chinese community describe the word 台独(people who want the independence of Taiwan) as a very horrible word. Moreover, The US is actualy different from Britain as lots of people there are the generation of Irish, German , Franch and Spanish while 98% people in Taiwan are pure Chinese!

Again, it was named Republic of China when the country was founded, and now it still have the same name stated on any form of ID they issued.

You guys “are” a communist country and is hated by a lot of people. Your government pays your workers minimum wages, you think thats fair? The PRC government tricks you, just like Joseph Stalin. You know how that turned out. Taiwan is its own country, never mind what China says. Taiwan controls everything on their own. If China “does” attack Taiwan, or nuke Taiwan (hope that never happens), China would be literally killing itself. Because Ironically, the workers of china depends on the company “Foxconn” to pay them their salary. Taiwan controls most of the factories there.

Those who believe that Taiwan itself is a country, do you believe that Hong Kong is a part of China? They have their government too. But they are part of China. Don’t ask me if USA belong to UK, that is a stupid question! How do you deal with the Civil War of American. Why is the U.S. never recoginze south American, the Confederate, as a indenpend country? They have their own government and military! The Union still believe they are all American. So don’t tell the Chinese what to do since at that time the American don’t what others to tell them what to do. Either you say that Taiwan is a province of mainland or you say mainland is belong to Taiwan. They are China, they are Chinese, they are from the same family.
