Hermann Goering escaped to the mountains where he was caught by U.S. troops at the end of World War II. With him he carried a large atlas with 33 maps of Europe. The atlas showed the locations and strengths of Germany's raw and industrial resources. The atlas is in the process of being reprinted in Germany.
