The dog days of summer refer to the heat of the summer but they're named for Sirius, the dog star, which is the brightest in the night sky. Ancient people believed that the bright star generated additional heat. The dog days typically run from about July 3 to August 11. Forty of the fifty U.S. states recorded their highest temperatures ever during this period. More from National Geographic.
