This is fascinating stuff! For the past few years, a company called Sea Launch has been launching satellites from a launch platform that sails to the equator near 154° West (south of Hawaii) to benefit from the most direct route to geostationary orbit. Earlier this week, the platform, command ship and the Telstar 18 satellite left Long Beach, California for their voyage to the equator. The satellite is expected to launch from the equatorial site on June 28. Follow along on their Current Launch page.
