An earthqake along the Cascadia subduction zone, which extends from southern British Columbia in Canada to northern California, ruptured in the year 1700, causing an earthquake with an estimated magnitude of 9.0. This earthquake in the Pacific Northwest resulted in a destructive tsunami that damaged coastal Japan.
