Scientists aboard the RRS Charles Darwin have recently found a new hydrothermal vent in the Indian Ocean near the Carlsberg Ridge, an ocean ridge north of the Seychelle Islands. This hydrothermal vent looks like an underwater volcano that is spewing black smoke, hence it is called a "black smoker." The black smoke is really not smoke at all, rather, it is super-heated sea water that is filled with minerals. You can follow the day-to-day progress of the research team through their online daily diary.
